Bodhi Day Celebration - December 6th at 9:30am (meditation practice begins at 9:00am)

11/27/2015

Picture
Bodhi Day is a Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni) experienced awakening (enlightenment). It is a day of remembrance, gratitude and meditation.

Service begins at 9:30am (which will be preceded by a period of meditation at 9:00am instead of the regular 108 bows practice).
Service will include:
  • chanting,
  • meditation,
  • lighting the lights,
  • hanging the morning star,
  • craft-making (bring some gift wrapping paper),
  • decorating of the tree,
  • honoring the three jewels,
  • community and sharing of food and tea.

Bodhi day is traditionally celebrated on December 8th where multi-colored lights and/or candles are lit and continued to be lit each evening for 30 days. During those thirty days many practitioners choose to devote more time to meditation practice, connecting to the historical Buddha's deep concentration practice that lead to awakening.

Our service on Dec. 6th is meant to be the catalyst for a more intensive period of personal mediation practice and deepening of understanding of the question: "What is this?".
