The Four D's of Disconnection
Think of the forms of life-alienating communication as the "Four D's of Disconnection":
- Diagnosis, judgement, analysis, criticism, comparison
- Denial of responsibility
- Demand
- "Deserve"-oriented language
Over the next two weeks complete one or all of these exercises:
1. Identify an instance of each category in your speech. Choose an instance where you were communicating with someone else, or if you prefer, focus on your self-talk. Rather than describing the situation, write down the exact words you used.
2. Choose one day as Four D-alert day. During this day, listen with heightened awareness to the way people around you are communicating. Whenever you hear a D, note and jot it down on paper. Do not forget to include what people are saying on TV, radio, computer, and ads. You can include instances of both written and spoken words.
3. Do you see ways that life-alienating communicaton benefits the Violence-cycle story, sociopolitical systems controlled by dictators, kings, and autocrats--or multinational corporations?
